Stargazing in Torrey, Utah: Dark Skies Near Capitol Reef

Torrey sits under some of the darkest skies in the country. Capitol Reef National Park, 10 minutes away, is a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, and the town of Torrey has its own dark sky designation. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other.

A telescope waiting on the observation deck

The Torrey House was built with the night sky in mind. Climb the spiral staircase to the observation deck, where a telescope is ready for you to explore the Moon, the planets and the Milky Way. With almost no light pollution, you don't need to drive anywhere to see it.

Tips for a great night under the stars

  • Plan your trip around the new moon: the darker the moon, the more stars you'll see.
  • Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust, and use a red light instead of your phone screen.
  • Bring warm layers. Desert nights get cold, even in summer.
  • Pick a clear, dry night and check the forecast before heading up.

Night sky programs at Capitol Reef

During the season, Capitol Reef rangers lead night sky programs in the park. Ask us when you book and we'll point you to the current schedule.
